Statement from Andrea Miller, President, National Institute for Reproductive Health
and its Campaign for a Pro-Choice New York
“The National Institute for Reproductive Health and its Campaign for a Pro-Choice New York applaud the Young Women’s Initiative for its boldly progressive report, which should serve as a blueprint for city leaders to prioritize and support young women and girls in New York City.
“The report makes a number of critical recommendations that would advance women’s reproductive health and rights, including the appointment of an NYPD liaison for abortion providers to ensure that New Yorkers can have safe access to reproductive health care facilities, the establishment of a dedicated fund for access to contraceptives including long-active reversible contraception, and expanded access to confidential reproductive and sexual health care at school-based health centers. Among other improvements, the report urges adoption of medically accurate, age-appropriate, comprehensive sex education in New York City public schools in every grade, every year.
“This report is revolutionary in its comprehensiveness of the issues affecting women and girls and its attention to the needs of a broad diversity of young women, including women of color, transgender women, and gender-non-conforming women. We are proud to work alongside the Young Women’s Initiative to accomplish these lofty goals, and we urge city officials to come together to implement these recommendations most completely and efficiently.”
