Beshear upsets anti-abortion extremist Matt Bevin in Kentucky gubernatorial election

NEW YORK – Andrea Miller, president of the National Institute for Reproductive Health (NIRH) Action Fund, released the following statement tonight celebrating Democratic Attorney General Andy Beshear’s win in Kentucky’s gubernatorial election, which signals widespread support for reproductive freedom in the face of state and federal attacks. Beshear will unseat Republican Governor Matt Bevin, one of the nation’s most extreme opponents of abortion access and an architect of the Kentucky six-week abortion ban who has made it his mission to shut down the state’s only abortion clinic.

“Attorney General Beshear’s win represents a turning point for reproductive freedom in Kentucky and across this country, proving that candidates can run, and win, on support for abortion access,” said Andrea Miller, president of the NIRH Action Fund. “In a southern, traditionally red state, Andy Beshear ran a campaign that addressed abortion access head-on, vowing to protect Kentucky residents’ constitutional rights in the face of the Trump administration’s assault on Roe v. Wade. In defeating Bevin, Kentuckians have made clear that they are ready to fight for every person’s right to make their own decisions about their bodies, lives, and futures. As we head into the 2020 campaign season, I urge candidates to look toward Kentucky as a reminder of the passionate support for abortion access in all corners of the United States.”
