What is Comprehensive Sexual Health Education?
Sexual health education is a critical component of young people’s overall well–being, and success. New York State does not currently mandate comprehensive, medically accurate, inclusive sexual health education statewide. NIRH and its Action Fund are working, in partnership with Girls for Gender Equity and other local organizations, to ensure young people have access to the information and skills they need to make informed decisions about their bodies and relationships.
NIRH Action Fund’s Role:
NIRH Action Fund is leading the charge to pass legislation that would require comprehensive sexual health education across all schools in New York state.
NIRH Action Fund engagements include:
- Lobbying: Working directly with state legislators to pass a mandate for comprehensive sexual health education.
- Youth Engagement: Partnering with youth organizations (including PP Gen Action Chapters and Reproductive Justice Collective) and student leaders to elevate young voices in the push for better education.
- Resource Development: Creating toolkits, fact sheets, and advocacy resources to empower communities to advocate for sex education reform.
