NEW YORK – Andrea Miller, President of the National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund (NIRH Action Fund), released the following statement commending the Democratic candidates who participated in both nights of the presidential debate for putting reproductive freedom front and center. The candidates’ support is critical amid an unprecedented national fight over abortion access that has spread to states across the country. In just the last six months alone, states including New York, Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont, New Jersey, and Nevada have moved to protect abortion access from federal attack.
“For the second night in a row, Democratic candidates vowed to stand up for the right to an abortion, assuring us that access to reproductive health care will be central to the 2020 election,” said Andrea Miller, president of the National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund. “Candidates on both nights of the first presidential debate boldly proclaimed their support for insurance coverage for abortion and overturning the Hyde Amendment, federal laws enshrining the protections of Roe v. Wade, the need for proactive state legislation, and more. There is no doubt that for as long as he is in the Oval Office, Donald Trump and his allies will continue to wage war on access to abortion care. I am heartened to hear the Democrats standing up for reproductive freedom, offering strong policies and promising a different path forward.”
For more than a decade, NIRH has been a leader in the fight to advance reproductive freedom across the country. Recently, they were integral to the successful effort to repeal an outdated criminal abortion ban in Massachusetts, and they led the fight to pass New York’s landmark Reproductive Health Act. Earlier this year, NIRH published a report tracking the passage of more than 100 bills to advance reproductive health, rights, and justice in 27 states and the District of Columbia (D.C.).
